Book review: Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape -

It is much deeper than that. By the way. I am not a Scientologist and have never visited any of their "churches" I am just a mom, nurse and concerned citizen who is trying to educate myself about abuses going on in our country. We should demand the Scientology be held accountable for the evil it is brought on innocent people. Would you listen to Beyond Belief again? It is a fascinating look at how people can be manipulated and abused in the name of religion.

It is a primer on child abuse as well. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Knowing she eventually escaped made each step she took in that direction riddled with anxiety and anticipation. Any additional comments? Anyone who reads this book will wonder how Scientology continues to survive. This book opened my eyes to the very sick and deranged world of Scientology.

I have always been curious about this book and I appreciated the perspective from someone who grew up knowing nothing else. The obvious abuses that she went through, as well as others, and the isolation is disturbing. I don't actually know how celebrities can subscribe to this theology, unless the religion that they are receiving is much different than those in the Sea Org.

I wouldn't doubt it since much of the money the church seeks is from large donors such as celebrities. It is truly shocking that people can get so brainwashed and watch their families split apart and allow it to happen! It's truly crazy making.

I really liked this book and think it shines a bright light on a very dark religion. There's a lot of info to take in initially but it was a fascinating story. Impossible to listen to in 1 go I enjoyed the book at first, fascinating subject but I found it a bit too long. Jenna had a horrible childhood and so do many other children of scientology shockingly so. There was a lot of repetition about sessions ect.. The narration was superb though and it got me through the ironing nicely. An engaging insight as to how someone, born into a belief system, struggled with what was dissonant between the faith and the realities she observed.

An absolutely riveting book, and mind boggled that this actually happened to someone. The idea that no one stepped in to help is as shocking as what the "church" actually did. Excellent book, drawing the listener into a dark and warped world of the CoS. Harrowing to hear Jenna and her mindset of her future in this world and how the accidental actions of her uncle changed a young girls fight to save the planet into an all out war of minds.

Incredible how a simple thing as a shared surname can create so much pain and distress in the fight for good PR. Whilst not read by Jenna herself the readers interpretation puts you into the young mind of the writer.

About the author

Very interesting from word go and found myself wanting to listen to it constantly because of how crazy the story is! I knew it was a weird cult. I had no idea just how evil and vile it was. Great to be read by the author. A harrowing tale where being your authentic self is the best for your soul and sanity. This is great for anyone who has seen 'Going Clear' and wants to learn more. It is such a powerful audiobook.

To hear this all from the niece of the guy who runs the show is refreshing.

These poor people are trained to not think for themselves, but obey the odd laws of the church. Highly recommended. An amazing story of resilience of the human spirit. Sandy reads Jenna"s incredible story with such heart and really captures the innocence of that little girl abandoned to the ruthlessness that is Scientology today. I cannot finish this book. It's so long winded and has taken hours from my life. Your audiobook is waiting….

Revealing about all religious cults Would you listen to Beyond Belief again? Kelli Crazy Story! Show More. Jamie Now she speaks out about her life, the Church, and her dramatic escape, going deep inside a religion that, for decades, has been the subject of fierce debate and speculation worldwide.

Piercing the veil of secrecy that has long shrouded the world of Scientology, this insider reveals unprecedented firsthand knowledge of the religion, its obscure rituals, and its mysterious leader—David Miscavige. From her prolonged separation from her parents as a small child to being indoctrinated to serve the greater good of the Church, from her lack of personal freedoms to the organization's emphasis on celebrity recruitment, Jenna goes behind the scenes of Scientology's oppressive and alienating culture, detailing an environment rooted in control in which the most devoted followers often face the harshest punishments when they fall out of line.

Addressing some of the Church's most notorious practices in startling detail, she also describes a childhood of isolation and neglect—a childhood that, painful as it was, prepared her for a tough life in the Church's most devoted order, the Sea Org. Despite this hardship, it is only when her family approaches dissolution and her world begins to unravel that she is finally able to see the patterns of stifling conformity and psychological control that have ruled her life. Faced with a heartbreaking choice, she mounts a courageous escape, but not before being put through the ultimate test of family, faith, and love.
